Classical Double Bass

After only 4 years on the double bass, Jules was admitted to the Masters programs on scholarships to The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music and New England Conservatory of Music. He finished his Master of Music summa cum laude at Manhattan under Timothy Cobb – Principal NY Phil, bass chair of Juilliard & MSM. Performing worldwide since 1992, Jules spent nearly two decades with The Zürich Symphony in Switzerland.

Electric Bass

Well before double bass, 1981 to be exact, Jules has been playing the electric bass, in bands and as a hired gun for every kind of event. Electric Bass is certainly a primary instrument among the list here. He’s a “virtual student” of Oteil Burbridge (fretted bass) and Gary Willis (fretless) foremost, but has analyzed and appreciated all the greats. He plays on 4, 5 and 6 string fretted and fretless basses and teaches how to play foremost, and reading when necessary or desired.

Piano & Keys, incl. Hammond Organ

Jules began classical piano at age 7 and exempted piano requirements as an undergraduate of music, but resumed piano as a minor while in graduate school at Manhattan. Always preferring to improvize, his prowess on keys is revealed in his recent jazz fusion albums. The Hammond Organ is his real passion, if relatively new in the mix of keyboards, and today he plays the modern dual manual Hammond SKX Pro and Crumar Mojo Classic organs.

Drums

Having studied with Jeff Sipe (Aquarium Rescue Unit), and with some bloke in 1981 who put Bob Seger’s Night Moves album on and left the room for 30 minutes, Jules Bryce is an excellent, funky drummer with a fantastic ear for the full band. Check this out. Following and analyzing the top drummers is his other passion and daily habit. Top influences besides Jeff Sipe are Adam Deitch, Alex Van Halen, Louis Cole, Keith Carlock, David Garibaldi and Stewart Copeland.

Guitar

Jules took classical guitar throughout middle school while also taking piano lessons. He is the younger sibling of a degreed professional guitarist Ben Coker, who since childhood often led Jules’s musical development and taught things on and about the guitar. His top influences are his own brother, John Scofield, Larry Carlton, Scott Henderson, Wayne Krantz, Robin Trower, Allan Holdsworth and Edward Van Halen. With guitar as a secondary, he counts himself as a potential rhythm guitarist.

Improv Technique & Band Coaching

How to improvize in any style is a favorite subject of Jules Bryce’s, and his scale degree based approach is applicable across all instruments and all styles. Improvization is his means of composition, and his albums are on the record label Improv Unedited and This Cat Records. He also plays keys for ChameleouS. Basic understandings and vocabulary also help band mates communicate, and Jules’s years of band experience enable him to coach any level band onto the next levels.
